The Mechanical Skull is used to summon Skeletron Prime, the hardmode equivalent of Skeletron. It can only be used during nighttime. Using another Mechanical Skull while Skeletron Prime is already spawned will result in instant death. It can also be used in a world without Hardmode activated.
If you have not yet defeated Skeletron Prime and are in Hardmode, all enemies (excluding statue-spawned monsters and Meteor Heads) have 1 in 2500 chance of dropping this item.
